Beginners’ Course

Our 8 week Beginners’ Obedience Course is for all dogs new to our club who are 5 months old or over. (There is no maximum age!)

On the first week, you come without your dog for an introductory session. Here you learn about pack leadership, preventing and dealing with problem behaviour, how your dog learns and what to expect at training. Members of your family or partner are very welcome to attend this session.

During the following 7 sessions, we teach you how to get your dog to walk nicely on the lead, come when called, sit, down, stand and stay. We also teach you how to manage your dog around other dogs. After the course you attend an assessment and on passing you will receive a certificate.

Class Times

A commitment to weekly attendance during the course will ensure you receive maximum benefit.

First week 3pm (do not bring your dog)

Second Week onwards 2.45pm .

Beginners Course Application Form

 What to bring:

  • Your completed application form and proof of payment or your course fee.
  • On the first week, bring just yourself and leave your dog at home.
  • From the second week, you will need a soft webbing or leather lead (1.2m) plus a "halti" type head collar or slip chain (all available at our club). No harnesses or chain leads please.
  • Poo bag to clean up after your dog.
  • Tasty pea size treats and/or favourite toy.

What to wear:

  • Comfortable clothes which do not fall off when you bend over!
  • Skirts tend to get in the way when training so for ladies, pants are recommended.
  • A moon bag or pocket in which to keep your treats or toy.
  • Closed non-slip shoes
  • A weather-proof jacket in Winter - we train whatever the weather, only extreme heat will halt training for the protection of your dogs.

General Notes:

  • You need to commit to attending all of the 8 lessons as missed classes cannot be made up. In the event of ill health (you or your dog) you can join the next course at no extra charge.
  • Children who would like to handle a dog must be attending high school . Only the club member may bring your dog to class every week, you may not send a family member or friends.
  • Please do not bring your dog to class if he has Kennel Cough or if your bitch is on heat. (Kennel Cough sounds like your dog has something stuck in his throat.)

Once you have completed the Beginners Course, you can become a member of our club and attend any of our other classes.
